Ifta Ya Sim-sim! “Open Sesame!”
Did you know…
:: There are 22 Arabic speaking countries,
each with their own unique music,
dance,
and traditional dress.
:: We use Arabic words every day: soffah–
a raised floor covered with carpets
and pillows.
:: Tarab is Arabic for “enchantment” —
a reciprocal state of pleasure felt by
musician, singer, dancer, and audience.
From hour-long workshops to full week artist residencies, these engaging, interactive programs introduce the rich heritage of
Arabian
arts and culture, dispels stereotypes, and helps develop a better understanding of a
people much maligned in today’s media.
Using Arabic dance and music as the door, Zulaika leads participants on an
exploration of the Arab world. From the men’s
stick dance in Egypt to the
woman’s party dance of Saudi Arabia, to the line dances of the Levant,
participants explore
the colorful and expressive dance traditions of the Middle
East in their cultural context. Each presentation is custom tailored to
the
audience using a myriad of movement, musical, and cultural activities.
